Oscars 2019 to air without ‘edits’ now
The academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has finally surrendered before the backlash and outcry that germinated after its announcement to cut Oscar categories from broadcast and present four awards during commercial breaks which aimed to shorten the runtime. These Categories included Cinematography, edition, live action short, makeup and hair.
The Academy has taken a U turn now on its earlier stand after facing backlash and outrage from influential members of entertainment industry. This will be uninterrupted viewing experience now for everyone keen to witness every single moment of Oscars.
“The Academy has heard the feedback from its membership regarding the Oscar presentation of four awards – Cinematography, Film Editing, Live Action Short, and Makeup and Hairstyling. All Academy Awards will be presented without edits, in our traditional format. We look forward to Oscar Sunday, February 24,” an Academy statement informed.

Unfortunately, we have drifted from this mission in our pursuit of presenting entertainment rather than in presenting a celebration of our art form and the people behind it. Relegating these essential cinematic crafts to lesser status is nothing less than an insult to those of us who have devoted our lives and passions to our chosen profession,”, This was signed by Christopher Nolan, Brad Pitt, Martin Scorsese, Damien Chazelle, Dee Rees. Alfonso Cuaron , nominated for Best Director and Cinematography for Roma, Guillermo Del Toro and Exorcist Director William Friedkin also joined in as they felt disturbed and insisted the significance and importance of these awards for live telecast. Actor Russell Crowe in the meantime went to the extent of tweeting,”, “It’s just too fucking dumb for words.” (Source: Hindustan Times)
Prior to this Academy was not willing to change its decision and was in no mood to budge from the stand it had taken. However, the reversal of its decision comes as huge solace for filmmakers of these categories. Open letters criticizing the move of academy, heavy criticism from unions representing these categories was getting intensified and was getting difficult to handle for the academy.
However, all’s well when ends well, Now Oscars will run as per schedule but run over time is extended to three hours which goes against previous trimmed time slot of 180 minutes.
