Bollywood throwback with diva and fashion Icon Sadhna Shivdasni
A true fashion and style icon who created signature styles and never dithered to experiment. We feel honoured to make a small endeavour towards paying our reverence and obeisance towards the immortal and timeless beauty of yesteryears, Sadhna Shivdasani, whose memories remain indelible and ephemeral, we at High On Persona choose the occasion of her birth anniversary to connect fashion driven gen X of today with the quintessential beauty who’s fashion sensibilities remained ahead of her time, till date diva is admired for acute fashion sense and perspicacity.
She never dithered to experiment with her styles and silhouettes and embraced them to make huge fashion statement. Although in her own words she was sceptical about her looks, she had a broad forehead that looked more prominent on camera. While shooting for Love In Shimla, the director (RK Nayyar, whom she later married) decided to give Sadhna Fringe haircut that became very famous signature ‘Sadhna cut’, inspiration was drawn from those days Audrey Hepburn’s Roman Holiday (she sported a fringe) had just released. She was India’s answer to Hollywood’s most stylish actress AUDREY HEPBURN. Not only for her appearance but also for demeanour and style, both had penchant for knowing nerve of fashion and created their own signature styles that became rage with young girls.
Simplicity remained focal point of very glamorous Sadhna. From a vulnerable village girl, a ghagra swinging desi dancer, a high society chic and fashionable woman, she carried different looks with ease and conviction. Style icon of yesteryear Sadhna was pioneer in introducing amalgamation of western style with Indian touch and elegance. She gave a new dimension to Indian fashion and mixed modernity with traditionalism. She remained convinced about curating her looks according to her personality. And her dexterity and temerity were even praised by stalwarts like Yash Chopra. She went on to create ‘fusion Churidar’ a fashion rage that is patronised by girls even today. She was asked to wear salwar kameez for her role in Waqt, however she wanted to opt for churidaar, she asked her designer Bhanu to create a fusion of traditional churidar and modern kurti for her personal wardrobe. As Yash Chopra saw her donning tight sleeveless gold embroidered kurti with churidaar, mojris and chic hair style he kept her look as it is in movie ‘Waqt‘ and the style went on to become a rage.
Sadhna was very fond of wearing beautiful sarees with intricate embroidery work on the border and was very selective of her choice, unlike many actresses of her time she would scout for the finest sarees herself, embroidered sarees in retro colours remained her favourite. From her character of a bold and beautiful look in the movie ‘Waqt’ she went on to mesmerize all with contemporary style in ‘Aarzoo’ and in ‘Mere Mehboob’ she made her fans swoon with Burqua look and unwittingly set off a ‘veiled’ trend.
Versatility and experimentation dominated her fashion sense as she stole hearts as ingenue and docile young girl who personified simplicity and elegance in ‘Asli Naqli’, starring opposite Dev Anand and personified simplicity and elegance through her look in the movie. From her tight churidar-kurtis to her bangs, her winged eyeliners enhanced beauty of her expressive eyes and set the trend of dramatic eyes, young girls followed the trend and many actresses also stepped in to follow suit. Her elaborate hairstyles, stone studded statement chokers and big jhumkas made her look ultra-beautiful.
